Disclaimer/Copyright Info ------------------------------------------ 1. ABOUT THIS GUIDE ------------------------------------------ Hey, everyone! Well, this is only my second FAQ, so I'm still fairly new to this kind of stuff. Basically, I got bored, and I decided to plagiarize my strategy guide to benefit all the .hack fans out there. Also, I threw in a FAQ because the same questions seem to be asked everyday on the .hack messageboard, and I know that it does get annoying, even to the most patient of us out there. I feel your pain! Will this guide ever include a walkthrough? Well, maybe. I've been following my strategy guide loosely, and I've noticed that there are a few discrepencies here and there. If I feel the urge to play through the game from the start once again, I'll probably add a walkthrough as I go. Hey, it can't hurt, right? Well, on with the guide! ------------------------------------------ 2. VERSION HISTORY ------------------------------------------ Version 1.0 (INSERT DATE HERE): INSERT BABBLE ABOUT VERSION HERE ------------------------------------------ 3. FAQ ------------------------------------------ Here are some frequently asked questions (duh) about the game, in no particular order. If you have any questions to add, email them to me at bushfanatic@bolt.com and I'll be sure to post them here when I update! All right, on with the FAQ! **NOTE: There may be minor spoilers located herein, so don't say I didn't warn you! Q: Is this game online? A: No, the game doesn't actually allow you to go online. It simulates what an online game would be like if you were the one playing it. You control the actions of a boy who controls a character within the game "The World". Q: How much space does this game take up on a PS2 memory card? A: 685 KB of space. Q: What's with the "Mature Sexual Themes" on the rating on the back of the box? A: No one's sure, really. Some people think it may be the nude statues located in a certain area of the game. Others think it's the lack of clothing on some of the characters within the game (Helba comes to mind...). Personally, I think it has to be the clothing. Q: So, this is only one-fourth of a game? A: Yep, that's right. This is part one of a four part series, which will all be released over the course of the year 2003 (we hope). Hence, it isn't a complete game. Q: Does my save carry over to the next installment? A: It sure does. You can even keep playing after you've beaten the game to find better items and equipment and to level your characters up. Though, the game makes it hard to level up once you get into the 30s somewhere. Q: How long does it take to beat this installment? A: It varies. Some people can beat it in 10 hours. Some take over 20. It all depends on what you make of the game, really. If you rush through it, you're not going to get as much out of it as someone who takes his or her time playing. If you want a long, drawn- out experience, you're in the wrong place. But you have to remember, this is part one of a four part game. Q: It's only one-fourth of a game, and it still costs $50? How is that not a gyp? A: Well, you get an awesome anime DVD with the game that's 45 minutes long, and gives you a sort of introduction to the .hack universe. I'm not even a fan of anime, and I enjoyed it! Q: How do you pronounce the title of the game? A: "Dot hack: Infection" Q: So, the game has spoken dialogue. Can I turn the Japanese audio track on? A: Yes, you can, since some people prefer that sort of thing. Q: What's this about a "Parody Mode" that makes the dialogue more humorous? A: This was an additional audio track included in the Japanese version of the game. It became available after you beat the game. All it did was replace the original spoken dialogue with humorous lines; sadly, it didn't make it to the U.S. version. *tear* Q: Where can I get Virus Cores? A: You can get Virus Cores by Data Draining any enemy. Small enemies give Virus Core A, medium-sized enemies give Virus Core B, and large enemies give Virus Core C. Bosses give you the other Cores that you'll need. Q: What do I do with the Book of Law/Book of Iron? A: Hold on to them. You'll need them in a later volume. Q: Piros's Diary lowers my stats, why?! A: Who knows. Maybe it's because Piros is a tool? All kidding aside, just trade it or sell it, or store it or whatever. Or use it and decrease your stats. ------------------------------------------ 4. CHARACTERS ------------------------------------------ ~~~~~~~~~ Kite ~~~~~~~~~ Class: Twin Blade Starting Level: 1 Starting HP: 63 Starting SP: 13 Starting Stats: Attack Defense Accuracy Evade ------ ------- -------- ----- Physical: 1.5 2.4 3.3 3.3 Magical: 1.4 1.4 2.6 2.6 Earth Water Fire Wood Thunder Darkness Mind Resist Body Resist ----- ----- ---- ---- ------- -------- ----------- ----------- Elemental: 1.2 1.2 1.2 1.2 1.2 1.2 4.0 4.0 Bio: Kite is the central character in the game. He is a young middle school student who enters the online gaming arena under the tutelage of his friend Yasuhiko, a.k.a. Orca. When Orca suffers a tragic accident and lands in the hospital, it becomes Kite's charge to investigate the online game "The World" and discover a cure to his friend's illness. Kite's kindness and skill as a gamer will net him many friends online. As Kite will see, these friends are his only allies against the powerful forces at work in "The World." Notes: Kite is pretty much an all-around player, at least from my experience. He's the only player you actually control, so make sure you keep him on the front lines where he can inflict a lot of damage on his opponents. Don't be afraid to use his skills, either. That's what they're there for! ~~~~~~~~~ Orca ~~~~~~~~~ Class: Blademaster Starting Level: 50 Starting HP: 1050 Starting SP: 160 Starting Stats: Attack Defense Accuracy Evade ------ ------- -------- ----- Physical: 31 31 57 57 Magical: 16 16 32 32 Earth Water Fire Wood Thunder Darkness Mind Resist Body Resist ----- ----- ---- ---- ------- -------- ----------- ----------- Elemental: 16 0 0 0 0 0 5 54 Bio: Orca, Kite's friend, is the one who not only convinces Kite to start playing "The World," but he's also the character who Kite trusts the most. Orca takes Kite under his wing and helps teach him how to play the game. Unfortunately, Orca gets struck down by an infected monster in a low-level dungeon. Not only does his game character get destroyed, but the real-life Orca goes into a coma. Orca is revered in "The World" by all those who know him. He and Balmung were known as the "Descendants of Fianna," which was the most powerful party found battling on the game's many servers. Orca was known for being very helpful to newbies and for showing lots of patience. Notes: You only have Orca in your party for one dungeon at the beginning of the game. He basically shows you the ropes, so be sure to listen to what he says! ~~~~~~~~~ BlackRose ~~~~~~~~~ Class: Heavy Blade Starting Level: 1 Starting HP: 70 Starting SP: 13 Starting Stats: Attack Defense Accuracy Evade ------ ------- -------- ----- Physical: 1.7 1.5 3.2 3.0 Magical: 1.3 1.3 2.6 2.6 Earth Water Fire Wood Thunder Darkness Mind Resist Body Resist ----- ----- ---- ---- ------- -------- ----------- ----------- Elemental: 0 0 1.2 0 0 0 0.1 5.0 Bio: Kite is anxious to make friends online and isn't too picky at first as he quickly latches on to BlackRose, a boisterous female with a sword as big as her ego. Kite meets this talkative player during his first trip online after the incident involving Orca. Although she is quick to give Kite a tongue-lashing for staring at her, she warms up to him before too long and the two become good friends--especially once she admits to being a newbie too! Notes: BlackRose will be a constant companion throughout the game. Her attacks are very powerful, and her skills are usually very effective. It's most likely that she and Kite will form a very close bond. Keep showering her with gifts early on. A valuable asset to any party. ~~~~~~~~~ Mistral ~~~~~~~~~ Class: Wavemaster Starting Level: 1 Starting HP: 55 Starting SP: 20 Starting Stats: Attack Defense Accuracy Evade ------ ------- -------- ----- Physical: 1.1 1.4 3.0 3.1 Magical: 1.8 1.3 3.2 2.8 Earth Water Fire Wood Thunder Darkness Mind Resist Body Resist ----- ----- ---- ---- ------- -------- ----------- ----------- Elemental: 0 0 0 0 1.3 0 5 0.2 Bio: Mistral is one of the most talkative players Kite encounters online. In addition to being a perky Wavemaster with great magical skills, she is in awe of Kite's magical bracelet and is always eager to join him in any adventure. Although Mistral always seems to be logged in and ready to answer an invite, the tribulations of life in the real world do get the better of her from time to time. It's not uncommon for her to suddenly log out of "The World" to tend to laundry or burnt dinners in the real world. Notes: While she may seem useless at first, Mistral is actually one of the best characters in the game. The thing with Wavemasters is that you have to tell them what to do via the chat commands, or they won't do anything at all. Selecting "Magic!" from the chat commands list is a sure-fire way to let Mistral wreak havoc on the enemy party. And that's exactly what she does. To quote her: "That was faaaaaaaaaaaaantastic! :D" Cute. ~~~~~~~~~ Mia ~~~~~~~~~ Class: Blademaster Starting Level: 5 Starting HP: 150 Starting SP: 25 Starting Stats: Attack Defense Accuracy Evade ------ ------- -------- ----- Physical: 4.0 4.0 7.5 7.5 Magical: 2.5 2.5 5.0 5.0 Earth Water Fire Wood Thunder Darkness Mind Resist Body Resist ----- ----- ---- ---- ------- -------- ----------- ----------- Elemental: 0 2.5 0 0 0 0 5.4 9.0 Bio: Root Towns are known for having numerous players milling about at any given time, and it's not uncommon to get an earful of gossip while heading to the nearby magic shop. That is exactly how Kite learns of Mia, the mysterious cat-like female player. Mia is very skiilled at only letting those around her know what she wants them to know--and not an ounce of information more. If this doesn't make her difficult to read as it is, the fact that she seldom responds to Flash invitations makes it even more difficult to gauge her. Mia is seldom seen without Elk. Notes: I really don't like Mia. I never found her to be all too effective in battle, and her skills are usually too slow and don't do enough damage. Couple that with the fact that it's hard to get ahold of her to invite her on a journey, and you have one heck of a useless character, IMO. ~~~~~~~~~ Elk ~~~~~~~~~ Class: Wavemaster Starting Level: 3 Starting HP: 85 Starting SP: 30 Starting Stats: Attack Defense Accuracy Evade ------ ------- -------- ----- Physical: 1.3 2.2 5.0 5.3 Magical: 3.4 1.9 5.6 4.4 Earth Water Fire Wood Thunder Darkness Mind Resist Body Resist ----- ----- ---- ---- ------- -------- ----------- ----------- Elemental: 0 0 0 0 0 1.9 7.0 0.6 Bio: Of all the characters Kite meets during his time online, Elk is the least serious about playing "The World." In fact, Elk is much more concerned about the time he spends with Mia--and with making her his first real friend. Elk eventually becomes extremely jealous of Kite and seeks to limit the time Mia spends with him. As such, Elk doesn't spend a lot of time online and isn't there to join Kite's party too often. Notes: I hated Elk at first, but the more I used him, the more I grew to like him. He's great if you use the "Magic!" command, but he always seems to die very quickly. A useful ally if you have the patience to heal him constantly. ~~~~~~~~~ Piros ~~~~~~~~~ Class: Heavy Axeman Starting Level: 3 Starting HP: 125 Starting SP: 19 Starting Stats: Attack Defense Accuracy Evade ------ ------- -------- ----- Physical: 3.4 2.2 5.9 4.4 Magical: 1.6 1.9 3.8 3.8 Earth Water Fire Wood Thunder Darkness Mind Resist Body Resist ----- ----- ---- ---- ------- -------- ----------- ----------- Elemental: 1.9 0 0 0 0 0 0.3 7.0 Bio: Piros is known as a true role-player. The person behind Piros is very interested in maintaining the integrity of the fantasy world depicted in "The World," and speaks as if he is from a different age. He wouldn't think of using slang and emotes to communicate with the other players. Piros is forever grateful of the playtime Kite shares with him and never refers to the boy by his name, but rather "he of fair eyes." As the only Heavy Axeman to befriend Kite, Piros is a valuable asset to any party. Notes: I don't like Piros, plain and simple. Yes, he's strong, but he's also slow, his battle music is extremely annoying, and he seems to die very quickly despite having high amounts of defense and HP. I just don't get him. Bring him along if you need some extra muscle. ~~~~~~~~~ Natsume ~~~~~~~~~ Class: Twin Blade Starting Level: 1 Starting HP: 63 Starting SP: 13 Starting Stats: Attack Defense Accuracy Evade ------ ------- -------- ----- Physical: 1.5 1.4 3.3 3.3 Magical: 1.4 1.4 2.6 2.6 Earth Water Fire Wood Thunder Darkness Mind Resist Body Resist ----- ----- ---- ---- ------- -------- ----------- ----------- Elemental: 0 0 0 1.3 0 0 0.1 5.0 Bio: Natsume is the consummate newbie. Not only is she obsessed with collecting weapons that are too strong for her current level, but she does not hesitate to beg and plead for other characters to give them to her. Fortunately, Natsume is a rather nice girl and spends enough time playing "The World" that she quickly levels up and becomes worthy of inclusion in one of Kite's parties. Notes: I like Natsume. She's quick, her attacks are effective, and she has some nice skills. She's basically a female version of Kite, and I can't argue with that one bit. She levels up rather quickly after you get her, so put her to good use. She's very well-balanced. ~~~~~~~~~ Gardenia ~~~~~~~~~ Class: Long Arm Starting Level: 10 Starting HP: 250 Starting SP: 40 Starting Stats: Attack Defense Accuracy Evade ------ ------- -------- ----- Physical: 8.0 5.0 14 14 Magical: 4.0 5.0 8.0 8.0 Earth Water Fire Wood Thunder Darkness Mind Resist Body Resist ----- ----- ---- ---- ------- -------- ----------- ----------- Elemental: 0 0 0 0 0 4.0 1.0 14 Bio: Like Orca, Gardenia has quite a following and finds herself in the awkward position of having an unofficial fan club. As Kite finds out, this goes against her very serious demeanor. In fact, Kite can only convince her to talk to him by proving himself in battle. Despite her hard shell, Gardenia is an expert fighter and is the perfect addition to Kite's party--just don't expect to joke around too much when she's present! Notes: INSERT NOTES HERE! ~~~~~~~~~ Sanjuro ~~~~~~~~~ Class: Heavy Blade Starting Level: 15 Starting HP: 350 Starting SP: 50 Starting Stats: Attack Defense Accuracy Evade ------ ------- -------- ----- Physical: 11.5 8.5 20 17 Magical: 5.5 5.5 11 11 Earth Water Fire Wood Thunder Darkness Mind Resist Body Resist ----- ----- ---- ---- ------- -------- ----------- ----------- Elemental: 0 0 0 5.5 0 1.5 19 Bio: Kite meets Sanjuro in a way not too different from how he meets Natsume--he wants something that Kite has. Despite Kite's generosity and will to hand over the desired Kotetsu sword to the quiet stranger, Kite never learns too much about this sword-wielding soldier. Although Sanjuro is quite a force in battle, his true powers (and personality) are to remain a mystery until a future volume in the series.
